HONOR GUARD

VFW Post 2480 Honor Guard

Honoring Those Who Served

Our Mission

Our dedicated VFW Post 2480 Honor Guard stands as a physical manifestation of our Post’s commitment to never forget. Their primary mission is to ensure that every eligible veteran is afforded the proper military honors they have earned through their service to the United States. They serve as a final tribute, offering comfort to families and a final salute to a fallen comrade.

What are Military Funeral Honors?

When requested by the family, the VFW Post 2480 Honor Guard typically provides the "authorized provider" elements, which may include:

  • Folding of the United States Flag: The precise, symbolic 13 folds, with the final star-side-up triangle representing the eternal nature of memory.
  • Presentation of the Flag: Gifting the carefully folded flag to the next of kin with a personalized statement of gratitude on behalf of a grateful nation.
  • The Rifle Volley Salute (Three Volleys): This distinct, three-shot salute is executed by our rifle team. This gesture is a time-honored military tradition that signifies that the field of battle is secure and the fallen can be safely removed. It is a powerful, final salute to a comrade-in-arms.
  • Taps: The sounding of the simple, somber, and deeply moving 24 notes that signify the final "lights out" for a service member.

Eligibility and Requesting Honors

The VFW Post 2480 Honor Guard provides honors to eligible veterans within Port Clinton and the surrounding communities.

Who is Eligible? In general, military honors are available for:

  • Military members on active duty or in the Selected Reserve.
  • Former military members who served on active duty and departed under conditions other than dishonorable.
  • Former military members who completed at least one term of enlistment or period of initial obligated service in the Selected Reserve and departed under conditions other than dishonorable.

How to Request Honors

Honors are typically requested by the funeral director on behalf of the family. If you are a family member planning services, please inform your funeral home that you wish to have the VFW Post 2480 Honor Guard present. The funeral director will coordinate directly with our Honor Guard.
